Messi’s Argentina, Yamal’s Spain set for showdown

The stage is set for the 2025 Finalissima, which will put Copa América 2024 champions Argentina against Euro 2024 winners Spain in a battle of continental titans.

This important event, sometimes known as the "grand final," follows a tradition started in 1985 by bringing together the greatest teams from UEFA and CONMEBOL.

The forthcoming match promises to be an exciting spectacle, pitting Argentina's famous Lionel Messi against a developing Spanish side led by 17-year-old phenom Lamine Yamal.

Interestingly, Messi and Yamal's sole previous contact occurred during a 2007 photoshoot, which has since gone viral.

Prior to the Euro 2024 finals, Yamal voiced his hopes to RAC1, saying, "I hope Messi wins the Copa América and I win the Euros, so I can play against him in the Finalissima."

The young star's ambition has come true, paving the way for an intergenerational duel of football prowess.

Messi's Argentina won the maiden Finalissima in 2022, defeating Italy 3-0 at Wembley Stadium.

Argentina aims to defend their championship, despite the absence of Ángel Di María, who has retired from international football. The 36-year-old attacker declared that Copa América 2024 will be his final participation for his country.

While the specific date for the 2025 Finalissima has yet to be announced, it is expected to take place in the summer, following the pattern established by the 2022 edition, which took place on June 1.

This highly anticipated encounter will be a highlight of the international football calendar, taking place during a season when there are no big European or South American games other than FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

The Finalissima provides a unique opportunity for spectators to watch top-tier international competition outside of the World Cup cycle. It will be the last major international competition before the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be hosted jointly by the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
