NNPCL denies shutdown of Port Harcourt refinery
The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited has denied that the re-streamed Old Port Harcourt Refinery has been shut down, claiming that it is fully operational. This follows alleged reports of a closure shortly after the refinery resumed operations two months ago.
Olufemi Soneye, NNPCL's Chief Corporate Communications Officer, made this disclosure on Saturday via his official X handle.
Soneye confirmed that the old Port Harcourt refinery is fully operational.
He clarified that recent reports claiming its shutdown are false, pointing out that the refinery's operational status was recently verified by former NNPC Group Managing Directors.
He stated, "The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd.) has been alerted to reports in a section of the media claiming that the Old Port Harcourt Refinery, which was re-streamed two months ago, has been shut down.
"We would like to clarify that such reports are completely false, as the refinery is fully operational, as verified a few days ago by former NNPC Group Managing Directors.
"Preparation for the day's loading operation is currently ongoing."
He emphasised that such claims were baseless and intended to undermine the refinery's operations.
The NNPC spokesperson urged the public to disregard the false reports, describing them as the work of individuals who want to create artificial scarcity and exploit Nigerians.
The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) announced in November that the Port Harcourt Refinery had resumed production after an extended period of rehabilitation.
However, the newly rehabilitated Port Harcourt refinery's operational capacity has been closely monitored.
