LG chair seeks support to end gender-based violence
The chairperson of Ibeno Local Government Area in Akwa Ibom State, Glory Ekah, has urged the community to lend their support to the Coordinator of the First Lady's office, Mrs. Helen Eno, in the battle against Gender-Based Violence within the state.Ekah made this appeal while addressing a sensitization event at Upenekang aimed at raising awareness about the risks associated with GBV, titled “Standing Together Against Gender-Based Violence,” on Saturday.
She emphasized that such violence impacts not just individuals but also families, educational institutions, places of worship, and society overall.
Ekah, therefore, called upon traditional leaders, religious figures, educational establishments, parents, and law enforcement to collaborate in the fight against GBV, as their influence can shape behaviors and attitudes in the community.
She stated, “Your support is crucial if we are to achieve lasting change, as a collective effort is essential to address this issue. I urge our young people to adopt a lifestyle characterized by discipline and self-control. Respect and abstinence should be regarded as true indicators of strength.
“Let me remind those who are married that genuine love should manifest as upliftment, protection, and respect, rather than turning households into battlegrounds or exerting control that leads to humiliation and even harm.
“If you belittle your partner, that is not love; relationships should be cultivated based on mutual respect.”
Ekah underscored the ongoing initiatives by Akwa Ibom’s First Lady to support the recovery of GBV victims.
“I applaud Lady Obareki for her steadfast commitment to this cause, emphasizing the significance of community involvement in the fight against gender-based violence.
She highlighted that the governance of Umo Eno has created an atmosphere where voices can be heard and lives protected, which are essential in the struggle against Gender-Based Violence in the state.
“Let us take this responsibility earnestly and support Akwa Ibom's First Lady in this fight for women.
“Let us raise our voices where silence reigned. Let us safeguard those at risk. Let us educate our children about what is right. Let us embrace love grounded in respect.
“With united efforts against this growing issue, Ibeno can cultivate a safer and more respectful environment for all its inhabitants.”
