FAAN, UBA complete renovation of Lagos airport terminal
The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria and the United Bank for Africa have collaborated to renovate the E-wing of Lagos' Murtala Muhammed International Airport and install four CNG-powered buses to improve passenger mobility.Olubunmi Kuku, the Managing Director of FAAN, made the announcement on Friday, adding that the development aims to improve the overall passenger experience at the airport.
The FAAN president stated, "Her words, 'You can see that we expanded our facilities for the future; hence the use of terminal 2.'" In addition, we are currently using terminal D and moving passengers in order to potentially decongest.
"We are considering our arrival time and slotting. This allows us to make the best use of the terminal's capacity as well as the timing of arriving and landing flights."
Earlier in his address, Festus Keyamo, Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, stated that the renovation is part of FAAN's larger initiative to revitalise Nigeria's airports in collaboration with private sector stakeholders, despite limited resources.
Keyamo also praised FAAN, the concessionaires, and the United Bank for Africa for their successful partnership on the project.
The minister stated, "This remodelled E-Wing is the result of our collaboration with Hussling and UBA. The new design includes modern lighting, upgraded flooring, and larger advertising displays, all aimed at improving the passenger experience.
"This is only the beginning." Next, we'll look at other parts of the airport, such as the D-Wing departure and arrival areas.
"It was a joke, but the message was serious. It is about maintaining a positive image of the country and its institutions. We have seen improvements and are determined to keep moving forward."
He attributed the improvements to the dedicated efforts of FAAN management and the cooperation of agencies such as Immigration and Customs.
"We are working closely with the National Security Adviser to ensure that the reforms we have started go smoothly. We've informed the NSA of the steps we've taken and requested his assistance in ensuring that all agencies work together in the best interests of passengers and the nation's image," he stated.
Oliver Alawuba, UBA's General Managing Director, emphasised the importance of private-sector involvement in national development through public-private partnerships for effectively addressing critical challenges.
"This is not just about bricks and mortar; it's about creating an environment that catalyses growth and unlocks opportunities across every sector of the economy," she said.
Alawuba also reaffirmed UBA's commitment to supporting future phases of airport modernisation, describing the E-Wing renovation as only the first step in a larger initiative.
