TotalEnergies, partners begin construction of Iraq gas treatment unit
TotalEnergies, in collaboration with Basra Oil Company and QatarEnergy, kicked off construction on ArtawiGas25 on Friday. This facility will process gas from the Ratawi field in Basra, Iraq.
TotalEnergies (45%) is the project's operator, followed by Basra Oil Company (30%) and QatarEnergy (25%).
The Gas Growth Integrated Project, which was signed in September 2021, is a $10 billion multi-energy initiative to develop Iraq's natural resources and improve electricity supply.
The GGIP project includes a large-scale gas processing plant, with an initial phase designed to process 300 million cubic feet of gas per day. This phase will concentrate on recovering flared gas from three oil fields and using the processed gas to generate 1.5 GW of electricity.
The ArtawiGas25 project is expected to make a significant contribution to reducing gas flaring at the Ratawi field by the end of 2025.
The project's innovative modular design is a key feature that could be replicated in other Iraqi oil fields.
Julien Pouget, Senior Vice President Middle East & North Africa, Exploration & Production at TotalEnergies, stated, "We are very pleased to launch the ArtawiGas25 project: it will give the Iragi people a tangible insight into the benefits of the GGIP, which will provide more energy with lower emissions. TotalEnergies is demonstrating its ability to provide valuable and timely solutions in accordance with the expectations of the government and the country's electricity needs through this project. We look forward to the next GGIP milestone in the coming weeks, which will be the start of construction on the 1 GW solar project.
