Minister decries 60-year-old fire service law, seeks urgent review
The Interior Minister, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has urged for the immediate overhaul of Nigeria’s fire service legislation, labeling the current laws as outdated and insufficient for contemporary rescue efforts.While speaking on Thursday during the ceremony to honor the newly appointed Comptroller-General of the Federal Fire Service, Olumode Adeyemi, in Abuja, Tunji-Ojo expressed concern that the regulations governing the service were created over sixty years ago.
“I am pleased that the National Assembly is present. They are already revising the fire service laws because the existing fire service act has been in place for more than six decades. We certainly need to enhance the rescue operations.”
The minister emphasized that the effectiveness of the fire service should be assessed based on its capability to avert loss of life and property.
“The Fire Service ranks among the most influential agencies in this nation. Each time there is a fire incident resulting in death during a rescue mission, it signifies a failure on the part of the Fire Service. Your role is to prevent fires—your importance to life is akin to that of oxygen,” he stated.
Tunji-Ojo further counseled the newly appointed fire service leader to not anticipate unanimous approval throughout his tenure.
He remarked, “You have my full support, but don’t expect to have the unconditional support of your personnel. It’s the reality. If you are waiting for complete backing, it may never come.
“Leadership does not equate to being popular. It is not solely about pleasing others with your words. Leadership comes from the conviction within one’s heart.”
He urged the officers to prioritize prevention, mitigation, and public accountability, stressing that “these aspects are as vital to life as the oxygen we inhale.”
In his inaugural address, Adeyemi vowed to collaborate with all stakeholders to enhance the Federal Fire Service.
He extended his gratitude to the president and minister for his selection.
Adeyemi said, “With deep humility and immense gratitude, I stand before you today on this momentous occasion of my decoration as the Comptroller-General of the Federal Fire Service. This appointment represents a significant honor, and I do not take this responsibility lightly. I commit to my utmost loyalty and unwavering dedication to validating this trust through diligent service, integrity, and effective leadership.”
