AN Abuja federal high court has sentenced housewife Maryam Sanda to death by hanging for killing her husband Bilyamin Mohammed Bello in November 2017 when she stabbed him to death with a broken bottle.
In a landmark case, Maryam was found guilty of killing Bilyamin, the son of Haliru Mohammed Bello, a former national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). After the incident, the police had charged her with culpable homicide in November 2017, seeking the death penalty under a two-count charge.
According to the police, she carried out the attack with the absolute intent to kill her husband. However, the accused pleaded not guilty to the crime when the matter was brought to court, leading to a trial of over two years.
After several attempts, Ms Sanda secured bail with several stiff conditions including an undertaking from her father to produce her in court until the end of the trial. Today, on Monday 27th, 2020, the court finally found her guilty as charged and sentenced her to death by hanging.
