Tobi Amusan and Ezekiel Nathaniel Secure Spots at the 2024 Summer Olympics

Nigerian track and field standouts, Tobi Amusan and Ezekiel Nathaniel, have successfully secured their spots to represent their country in the 2024 Summer Olympics, set to be held in Paris, France.

Amusan, a former world champion in the 100-meter hurdles, and Nathaniel, a talented 400-meter hurdles, earned their places in the Summer Olympics based on their remarkable performances in recent months.

The qualification process for athletes aspiring to participate in the 2024 Summer Olympics was outlined by World Athletics in December of the previous year, including specific criteria for athletes.

Amusan became the first Nigerian athlete to meet the qualifying standards. She achieved this feat on July 2 at the BAUHAUS-Galan Diamond League event in Stockholm, Sweden, completing the 100-meter hurdles in a remarkable 12.52 seconds, surpassing the 12.77-second qualifying time. Since then, the 26-year-old athlete has continued to improve, achieving a season-best time of 12.34 seconds on July 16 at the Silesia Kamila Skolimowska Memorial Diamond League competition in Chorzów, Poland.

As for Ezekiel Nathaniel, the 400-meter hurdles world record holder for Nigeria with a record of 48.42 seconds, he needed to compete in the World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary, to become eligible for his debut appearance at the Olympics. Nathaniel's impressive time of 48.47 seconds comfortably surpassed the entry requirement of 48.70 seconds.

Additionally, during the World Athletics Championships in Budapest, long jumper Ese Brume came very close to securing her spot in the Paris Olympics. Her jump of 6.84 meters earned her a fourth-place finish in the final, falling just two centimeters short of the 6.86-meter requirement for Olympic qualification. Brume still has an opportunity to meet this requirement in the upcoming Diamond League final scheduled for September 16–17 in Oregon, USA.
