Ofili and Akintola Miss Out on 200m Final at 2023 World Athletics Championships

The date of August 24 marked a disappointing turn for Nigerian sports and athletes participating in the 2023 World Athletics Championships held in Budapest, Hungary.

Two promising Nigerian sprinters, Favour Ofili and Alaba Akintola, who were anticipated to secure medals for Nigeria, faced a setback as they were unable to advance to the finals of the 200-meter events on that day.

Favour Ofili participated in the women's 200-meter semi-finals during Heat 3. Regrettably, she secured the 6th position with a time of 22.86 seconds. In the same event, defending champion Shericka Jackson claimed the first place with a time of 22.00 seconds, followed by Sha'Carri Richardson, the 100-meter world champion, finishing second in 22.20 seconds.

On the men's side, Alaba Akintola concluded Heat 2 in the 8th position with a time of 20.75 seconds. His performance fell short of securing him a spot in the men's 200-meter final at the 2023 World Athletics Championships.

In the men's 200-meter event, Letsile Tebogo, the silver medalist in the 100 meters with a time of 19.96 seconds, and double silver medalist Kenny Bednarek, with a time of 19.97 seconds, clinched the first and second positions, respectively, advancing to the final scheduled for August 25.

Additionally, Tobi Amusan was unable to defend her world title on August 24. The title was taken from her in the final by 30-year-old Jamaican athlete Danielle Williams, who previously secured the title in 2015. The current Olympic champion, Jasmine Camacho-Quinn of Puerto Rico, secured the second position with a time of 12.44 seconds, while Kendra Harrison of the United States finished third in 12.46 seconds.
