Nigerian-Origin Players Set to Make Debut on Italy's Sports Stage
Two up-and-coming footballers of Nigerian heritage are considering a switch to the Italian national team during the October international break.
Italy is facing challenges in its bid to qualify for the 2024 European Championship. These difficulties, including missing out on the 2022 FIFA World Cup and failing to secure victory in the Nations League in June, led to the resignation of Coach Roberto Mancini as the team's head coach.
Luciano Spalletti, renowned for guiding Napoli to their first Scudetto win in 33 years last season, has assumed the role of head coach for Italy's national team.
However, Spalletti's appointment hasn't yet yielded substantial results. In his debut game in charge, Italy played to a 1-1 draw against the lesser-rated North Macedonia on September 9.
Coach Spalletti and his team, currently occupying the third spot in Group C, are set to face Ukraine at 7:45 p.m. later today, September 12, with hopes of regaining their winning momentum in the qualification series.
Following the September international break, Coach Spalletti plans to infuse fresh talent into the squad, and he's closely monitoring two footballers of Nigerian heritage, as reported by the Italian publication La Gazzetta dello Sport.
These two players are Destiny Udogie, who currently plays for the Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur, and Michael Kayode, who is presently with the Italian Serie A club Fiorentina.
Michael Kayode, aged 19 and born in Italy to Nigerian parents, has previously represented Italy's under-19 national team, but he remains eligible to play for Nigeria.
Destiny Udogie, also born in Italy to Nigerian parents and at the age of 20, has participated in Italy's youth levels but retains eligibility to play for the Super Eagles of Nigeria.
Italy's head coach may consider inviting them during the October international break for the Italy vs. Malta and England vs. Italy Euro 2024 qualifiers.
Other potential invitees to Italy's national team in October include Nicolò Fagioli (Juventus), Samuele Ricci (Torino), Cesare Casadei (Leicester City, on loan from Chelsea), Fabio Miretti (Juventus), Moise Kean (Juventus), and Gianluca Scamacca (Atalanta).
