Nigerian Athletes Excel at the 2023 ITTF Africa Senior Championships

Nigerian table tennis players showcased their brilliance at the 2023 ITTF Africa Senior Championships, securing victories in both the men's singles and women's doubles events during the tournament.


Quadri Aruna, a prominent figure in Nigerian table tennis, emerged as the standout performer at the 2023 ITTF Africa Senior Championships. The 35-year-old veteran displayed exceptional skills and determination throughout the competition, which took place in Tunis, Tunisia from September 11 to Sunday, September 17.


In an impressive final match, Quadri Aruna defeated Egyptian table tennis player Ahmed Saleh with a commanding 4-0 scoreline (11-2, 12-10, 11-6, 11-6) to clinch the men's singles title. Aruna had previously secured his spot in the final by defeating another Nigerian player, Olajide Omotayo, with a 4-0 victory (12-10, 11-6, 11-9, 11-2).


On the other side of the men's singles bracket, Ahmed Saleh overcame Congo's Idowu Saheed with a 4-2 victory (12-14, 8-11, 11-8, 11-8, 11-7) in the semifinals after initially falling behind by two sets. This set up an exciting final showdown against Aruna, but Aruna's exceptional performance secured his third continental championship. His previous victory came a year ago when he defeated Egypt's Omar Assar 4-3 to claim his second championship in Algeria.


In the women's doubles event, Nigeria's Fatimo Bello and Funke Oshonaike delivered a stunning upset by defeating Egypt's Sarah Hanffou and Marwa Alhodaby with a 3-2 scoreline (11-8, 8-11, 11-4, 7-11, 12-10) in a thrilling final.


In the women's singles, Hana Goda emerged victorious by defeating her fellow Egyptian table tennis star, Dina Meshref, with a 4-1 scoreline. These results highlight the continued dominance of both Egypt and Nigeria in the sport of table tennis in Africa.
