Mauritius Pulls Out of Under-20 World Cup Qualifiers Against Super Falconets

The Nigerian Under-20 Women's team, Super Falconets, has progressed to the third round of the African Under-20 Women's World Cup qualification for Colombia 2024. The advancement follows the withdrawal of the Mauritius Under-20 Women's National team, as communicated by the Mauritius Football Association to the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

Originally, Mauritius was set to host the opening leg of the qualifiers a week before the second leg, scheduled for October 14 at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja. However, CAF received notification of Mauritius' withdrawal, leading to the alteration of plans.

In a statement released by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) on September 28, CAF confirmed the change and declared Nigeria qualified for the next round. The message from CAF stated, "Kindly note that CAF was informed of the withdrawal of Mauritius FA from the African qualifiers of FIFA U-20 WWC 2024. Consequently, Nigeria qualified for the next round of the competition, and the missions of all officials of matches 37 & 38 are canceled."

Mauritius had qualified for the second round after defeating Chad's under-20 women's team and was anticipated to provide a formidable challenge for the Super Falconets in the third round. However, Nigeria has now advanced to the next stage without a contest.

In the Colombia 2024 U-20 Women's World Cup, two teams from Africa will compete, with the Super Falconets aiming to secure one of those spots. The Nigerian team has previously reached the quarterfinals in the 2022 edition but faced defeat against The Netherlands.

This occurrence marks the second instance in a short period where a women's team has withdrawn from an international qualification game against a Nigerian women's team. Recently, Sao Tome and Principe's women's team withdrew from Women's AFCON qualifiers against the Super Falcons earlier this month.
