Esther Onyenezide Expresses Joy Over Super Falcons Invitation
Nigerian midfielder Esther Onyenezide is celebrating her first-ever call-up to the Super Falcons of Nigeria squad, expressing her excitement on X. The 20-year-old player is set to feature in the Super Falcons' match against Ethiopia in Addis Ababa, marking the first leg of the 2024 Women's Olympics qualifiers. The game is scheduled to kick off at 1:30 p.m. later in the afternoon.
Falcons head coach Randy Waldrum made an unexpected call-up for Onyenezide due to an injury to Halimatu Ayinde. Onyenezide gained recognition at last year's Under-20 Women's World Cup in Costa Rica, contributing to Falconets' success in reaching the quarterfinals.
Expressing her joy for the upcoming debut, the Rivers Angels player stated on her X account, "Excited to announce that I’ve been invited to join Nigeria’s senior women’s national team. It’s an honour to represent my country and wear green and white. Can’t wait to give it my all and make Nigeria proud against Ethiopia."
The first leg of the match is set for today at Addis Ababa’s Abebe Bekila Stadium, with the second leg scheduled for Tuesday, October 31, at Abuja’s Moshood Abiola National Stadium. If the Super Falcons secure victory on aggregate after the two-legged encounters, they will face the winner of the match between Uganda and Cameroon.
