Tinubu completed his studies at Chicago State University in 1979
Chicago State University (CSU) confirmed that President Bola Tinubu attended the institution and successfully graduated in 1979 with a bachelor's degree in Business and Administration. In a statement released by CBS News (CBS Broadcasting Inc.), CSU expressed confidence in the accuracy and credibility of their records regarding Tinubu's completion of graduation requirements and degree certificate.
Nonetheless, the university emphasized that United States federal law prohibits them from disclosing any additional information about Tinubu's records unless they have consent or are authorized to do so through a court order.
The controversies surrounding Tinubu's academic records entered a new phase when the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar, raised the issue in a U.S. court.
During a hearing in Chicago, Atiku requested that a federal judge compel CSU officials to provide Tinubu's academic documents and participate in depositions.
Judge Jeffrey Gilbert of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois did not make a ruling on the request.
The statement issued by Chicago State University regarding Tinubu, as reported by CBS, stated: "As an educational institution, we are occasionally called upon to furnish information pertaining to student records.
"Federal law, specifically FERPA (the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act), safeguards the privacy of student records and restricts the disclosure of such information by an institution.
"In August 2023, a request was submitted in a U.S. federal court seeking educational record information concerning Bola Tinubu, the President of Nigeria, and a former CSU student."
"The university has verified that Tinubu attended CSU and completed his bachelor's degree in 1979. Nevertheless, federal law prohibits us from disclosing additional information unless authorized by court order or with consent."
"CSU maintains full confidence in the accuracy and integrity of our records pertaining to Tinubu's fulfillment of graduation criteria and degree certification.
"We want to emphasize that the university is not directly involved in the Nigerian legal proceedings that prompted this inquiry. The decision to disclose additional information rests with a U.S. federal judge, who will assess the validity of the request.
"Our response aligns with our established procedures, policies, and federal regulations. We would adhere to the same approach when handling any request for student information from an external entity."
