Insider Discloses Atiku's Stance on Saraki's Potential Appointment as PDP Chairman
Insiders cited in reports on the internal dynamics of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) suggest that the party is contemplating selecting former Senate President Bukola Saraki as its substantive National Chairman.
After the court suspension of Iyorchia Ayu as the party's chairman in Benue State, Umar Damagun has been actively fulfilling the role. However, efforts to revitalize the party have commenced, with Saraki potentially emerging as the consensus National Chairman. Saraki's recent meeting with FCT Minister Nyesome Wike is speculated to be linked to realignment among PDP leaders.
In response to these developments, a source disclosed to The Sun that former Vice President and 2023 presidential candidate of the PDP, Atiku Abubakar, maintains personal connections with Ayu. Still, he is not opposed to Saraki assuming the role of the party's national chairman. The source noted that Atiku's supporters may also be amenable to the move, as there is a general inclination towards moving forward.
The source emphasized that, in the upcoming party dispensation, affiliations with Atiku's camp are becoming less crucial, and the primary concern for stakeholders is the party's survival. There seems to be no apparent reservation from Atiku's side regarding Saraki, even though Atiku continues to maintain ties with Ayu, who is currently involved in legal proceedings.
While the exact timeline for Saraki's potential appointment remains uncertain, sources indicate that the former Kwara State Governor is already engaging with key stakeholders within the party. The PDP itself is closely monitoring court proceedings related to Ayu's case and awaiting the Supreme Court's stance on the 2023 presidential election outcome.
