Nigerian rapper David Omoregie win’s UK’s Mercury Prize for his debut album Psychodrama

NIGERIAN-born rapper David Orobosa Omoregie popularly known as Dave among his teaming fans in the UK where he is based has just won the UK’s Mercury Prize for his debut album Psychodrama.

 

Dave, 21, from London, released Psychodrama in March, which has been described as the boldest and best British rap album in a generation. Psychodrama entered the UK charts at number one and has sold 129,354, copies to date, according to a BBC report.

 

Receiving his award, Dave  went on to dedicate the award to his mum, his family and friends, especially his brother, Christopher, who is serving a life sentence for murder. When he took to the stage, he invited his mum to up come and join him.

 

BBC music reporter Mark Savage, said Psychodrama was inspired by the therapy Christopher is receiving in prison, in which offenders role-play events from their past to help with rehabilitation. He added that Dave cast an eye over his own life to see what lessons he could learn.

 

Psychodrama’s lead single, Black, focused on the perception of black people in the UK. Dave said he was totally surprised with the success of the album and the way it had catapulted him into the limelight.
