WhatsApp launches payment within app in Singapore

Following the launch of payments within a chat in India and Brazil, WhatsApp is reportedly launching payments within a chat in Singapore.

The tech firm is said to have collaborated with Stripe, a digital payment company, to bring the feature to the region.

According to Tech Crunch, WhatsApp built this payment feature using the Stripe Connect and Stripe Checkout solutions, making in-app payments available online and offline.

Customers can now pay businesses with credit cards, debit cards, or the PayNow fund transfer system in Singapore.

However, Meta stated that the feature is currently only available to a few businesses, but that it intends to expand its availability to more merchants in the coming months.

Businesses can enable this feature through WhatsApp Business, which will also guide them in obtaining a Stripe account.

"Most people I know in Singapore use WhatsApp to chat with each other," said Sarita Singh, Stripe's regional head and managing director for Southeast Asia, in a statement to Tech Crunch. They can now use the app to pay local businesses as well. The speed and convenience of payments via WhatsApp will assist businesses in expanding their revenue streams through new channels and reaching a larger customer base."

In 2020, WhatsApp payment was first tested in India on the country's Unified Payment Interface network. It also began accepting merchant payments in Brazil last month, after allowing peer-to-peer payments for about three years.
