UK and Nigeria sign an agreement enabling British lawyers to practice in Nigeria

The United Kingdom and Nigeria are poised to finalize a partnership agreement allowing British legal professionals to establish businesses and provide services in Nigeria.

The press release on Tuesday announced that the partnership deal between the UK and Nigeria aims to boost trade and investment, opening new opportunities for both nations.

The announcement also revealed that it is designed to expand beyond the financial sector and can build upon an already fruitful $7 billion partnership between the two nations.

As per the UK's Department of Business and Trade, both countries are on the verge of signing a new partnership aimed at bolstering cooperation.

This agreement, known as The Enhanced Trade and Investment Partnership (ETIP), marks the first time the UK has entered into such a deal with an African country.

Kemi Badenoch, the British Business and Trade Secretary, shared that the agreement would unlock numerous opportunities for the British, considering Nigeria's status as one of the fastest-growing economies in Africa.

The collaboration with Nigeria marks the UK's inaugural partnership with an African country, providing a platform for joint efforts and the pursuit of forthcoming opportunities. Nigeria boasts one of the world's fastest-growing economies.

Kemi Badenoch expressed, "UK businesses have already experienced significant success here, and I anticipate the continued growth of this relationship."

Additionally, the agreement will entail Nigeria taking measures to reduce barriers that impede UK lawyers from practicing international and foreign law in the West African nation.

The agreement will involve Nigeria undertaking efforts to eliminate obstacles that hinder UK lawyers from engaging in international and foreign law practice within Nigeria. This move has the potential to substantially enhance the export of legal services from the UK," the statement noted.
