Two Nigerian-Americans Appointed as Advisors by U.S. President Joe Biden
U.S. President Joe Biden has selected two Nigerian-Americans to serve as advisors for African Diaspora Engagement within the United States. Osagie Imasogie and Chinenye Ogwumike are among the 12 individuals appointed to the President's Advisory Council on African Diaspora Engagement.
In response to their appointments, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, the Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), extended her congratulations to Imasogie and Ogwumike for their nominations as advisors to President Biden. In a statement released by the commission's spokesperson, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, Dabiri-Erewa expressed her delight at the inclusion of these two outstanding Nigerians in the advisory council, emphasizing that their recognition and appointment serve as motivation for other Nigerians and Africans at large.
Chinenye Ogwumike is a two-time WNBA All-Star who currently holds a full-time position as a multi-platform ESPN commentator and NBA analyst. She has the unique distinction of being one of the few professional athletes who simultaneously maintain full-time roles in national sports media broadcasting. Ogwumike earned the title of 2014 WNBA Rookie of the Year and boasts two WNBA All-Star selections (2014, 2018). She proudly identifies as Nigerian-American and graduated from Stanford University with a degree in International Relations, under the mentorship of Dr. Condoleezza Rice. In August 2020, she made history as the first Black woman to host a national daily sports-talk radio show. Furthermore, Ogwumike serves as an Executive Producer, overseeing an ESPN Films documentary titled "144," which explores the 2020 WNBA season.
Osagie Imasogie, on the other hand, serves as the Chairman of Quoin Capital, an Investment Bank, and SEC/FINRA registered Broker-Dealer. He is also a co-founder of PIPV Capital, a private equity firm specializing in the life sciences sector, with investments exceeding $1 billion in the industry. Before co-founding PIPV Capital, he played a pivotal role in establishing GlaxoSmithKline Ventures, where he served as the founding Vice President. Imasogie has held senior positions in both commercial and R&D capacities at pharmaceutical companies like GSK, SmithKline Beecham, and DuPont Merck. Additionally, he has worked as a Partner at Price Waterhouse Corporate Finance and practiced law as an attorney with the renowned U.S. law firm Schnader, Harrison, Segal & Lewis.
Imasogie's entrepreneurial and investment endeavors extend to various financial institutions, including FS-KKR Capital Corp and Haverford Trust, collectively managing over $28 billion in assets. He also provides advisory services to Brown Advisory, a firm overseeing in excess of $140 billion. Imasogie holds roles of significance in cultural and educational institutions, such as Vice-Chair of the Executive Committee at the Philadelphia Museum of Art and membership in the Executive Committee, where he chairs the Nominating & Governance Committee for the Philadelphia Orchestra and Kimmel Center. Furthermore, he serves as a Trustee at the University of Pennsylvania, holds positions within the University's Executive Committee, and serves as the Chairman of the Board for the University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School, where he also works as an Adjunct Professor of Intellectual Property. Imasogie has earned LLM degrees from both the London School of Economics and the University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School and holds membership in the New York State Bar, along with admission to practice in various jurisdictions.
