Twitter removes legacy verified blue ticks

Twitter said goodbye to its 'legacy' blue ticks on Thursday, following Elon Musk's controversial decision to change the platform's verification system.

As of Thursday evening, our correspondent noticed that Twitter had removed the blue tick from 'legacy' verified accounts.

The change has impacted several people, including journalists, because Twitter requires a $8 monthly payment to subscribe to 'Twitter Blue' if account holders want to keep their verification badge or if they want to get the blue tick for the first time.

Many checkmarks vanished from Twitter accounts for users who were unwilling to pay $8 per month for the traditional blue badge.

Initially, 'Legacy' blue ticks were assigned to verified accounts belonging to public figures such as celebrities, politicians, and journalists.

However, since Musk's acquisition, only those who have subscribed to Twitter Blue can keep a blue tick, while businesses must now pay for a gold tick.

This decision was made as part of Musk's efforts to end the so-called "lords and peasants system" for determining who has or does not have a blue checkmark.

Musk tweeted earlier this month, "Final date for removing legacy blue checks is April 20."

The initial date to begin removing 'legacy' ticks was April 1, but many remained after this date, causing confusion.

Musk then announced ten days later that the 'final date' for removing these ticks would be April 20.
