The Jigawa State Assembly has imposed a suspension on local government chairpersons due to their ove

The Jigawa State House of Assembly has suspended three local government council chairmen for allegedly undertaking international travel without obtaining permission from the state executive or legislature.

The suspended chairpersons are Mubarak Ahmed of Yankwashi LGA, Rufai Sunusi of Gumel LGA, and Umar Baffa of Birniwa LGA, who reportedly traveled to Rwanda.

The decision to suspend these chairmen was made following a motion presented by Aminu Tsubut, the Chairman of the Committee on Local Government Affairs. Tsubut explained that the House had previously issued an order prohibiting local council chairmen in the state from traveling, especially during the preparation of the 2024 state appropriation bill, which Governor Mallam Umar Namadi was scheduled to present to the Assembly.

Tsubut remarked, "This displays an act of insubordination and a nonchalant attitude towards their primary responsibilities, demanding an immediate investigation."

Usman Abdullahi Tura and Hamza Guri, representing Malam Madori and Guri constituencies, respectively, seconded Tsubut's motion.

Subsequently, the House collectively endorsed the suspension of the three local government chairmen and instructed the vice chairpersons of the affected councils to assume their responsibilities.

At the same time, the Assembly established a committee led by the Majority Leader, Lawan Muhammad Dansure, to probe the issue. The committee is tasked with reporting its findings to the House within a four-week period for subsequent action.
