The Commissioner of Police in Anambra cautions against the practice of jungle justice
Aderemi Adeoye, the Commissioner of Police in Anambra, has issued a warning to residents, urging them to refrain from resorting to jungle justice. The command, under his leadership, will not tolerate instances where individuals take the law into their own hands by lynching suspects without due process.
In a statement released by the Police Public Relations Office, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, the commissioner emphasized that those involved in such acts would face murder charges. He condemned mob lynching as savage and deemed it even more atrocious than the crimes allegedly committed by the suspects themselves.
According to the PPRO, two individuals have been apprehended in connection with a recent incident of mob lynching that led to the demise of alleged criminals.
"If someone steals a phone, the legal punishment is three years imprisonment. However, resorting to mob violence and causing someone's death is considered murder, and the penalty for murder is the death sentence. The judicial system has not authorized anyone outside the legal process to act as judge, jury, and executioner," he emphasized.
Adeoye praised the constant vigilance and collaborative efforts of Anambra residents in maintaining peace and security within the state. However, he urged them to report any criminal incidents to the police for appropriate action.
He emphasized, "If justice is elusive, individuals are encouraged to reach out to my office directly. I assure the people of Anambra that the Command is committed to upholding law and order. Resorting to self-help is unnecessary and will not be tolerated."
Meanwhile, a recent statement from the state PPRO, DSP Ikenga, highlighted the impact of an organized syndicate exploiting the insecurity in certain areas of Anambra to extort money from residents through threatening means. The release mentioned, "In Ozubulu and Umunze towns in Anambra State, the police have dismantled two dangerous syndicates engaged in extorting money from unsuspecting members of the public using deadly threats. In Umunze, Orumba South LGA Headquarters, two suspects were apprehended after thorough investigation."
