Senate President Akpabio Receives Stern Warning: Resign or Face Impeachment

The demand for Senate President Godswill Akpabio's resignation or potential impeachment has been strongly articulated by the United States chapter of the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO). In a statement issued by its executive director, Lloyd Ukwu, Esq., the group accused Akpabio of transforming the Senate into an extension of the presidential villa, thereby reducing lawmakers to a rubber stamp for President Bola Tinubu and the executive.

Akpabio was further criticized for his alleged naivety, immaturity, and high-handedness in managing Senate affairs, leading to the ridicule of the National Assembly. The group claimed that Akpabio lacked respect for his colleagues, disregarded the Standing Rules of the Senate, and failed to facilitate thorough scrutiny of executive communications and bills.

NADECO asserted that since the commencement of the 10th National Assembly, Akpabio frequently delayed plenaries, extended sitting times without providing ample opportunities for legislative input, and withheld communications from the President until the end of plenary sessions. The group also accused Akpabio of amending Senate Standing Rules to prevent first-term Senators from vying for the position of presiding officer, violating constitutional provisions.

The statement highlighted instances where Akpabio allegedly coerced Senators to pass bills without proper scrutiny, showed a lack of empathy for the masses, and disrespected fellow Senators. NADECO warned of mobilizing its members and Nigerians in the diaspora for mass action if Akpabio refuses to resign or face impeachment. The group pledged to use its influence to ensure that international institutions and nations do not recognize the Nigerian Senate under Akpabio's leadership. NADECO emphasized its readiness to take necessary actions to portray the 10th Senate under Akpabio as an institution lacking seriousness and responsibility within the international community. Ukwu regretted Akpabio's perceived transformation of the National Assembly into an annex of the Presidential Villa and his alleged connivance with the executive to approve loans and other requests without due process or robust debate.
