Reports Indicate at Least 340 Men Endured Physical Abuse from Their Wives in Lagos Over the Past Yea
Over the past 12 months, Lagos State has documented at least 340 cases of husbands experiencing physical assault from their wives, as disclosed in recent reports by the Executive Secretary of the Lagos Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA), Titilola Vivour-Adeniyi. The quarterly report highlighted a twofold increase in the number of male victims reporting domestic abuse between September 2022 and July 2023, with 340 men reporting incidents of violence by their spouses.
Simultaneously, the Lagos State Government has initiated a monitoring and evaluation process across the six education districts in the state through the Joint Task Force on Implementation of the Executive Order on Safeguarding and Child Protection. This task force, comprising representatives from various government agencies, is overseeing the process to ensure compliance with the executive order.
Vivour-Adeniyi indicated that the monitoring process commenced on October 31, 2023, at Lagos City College, Sabo-Yaba, and has covered more than 200 schools in Education areas 4 and 5. Over 90 schools were visited to assess and ensure adherence to the policy. The aim of the exercise is to evaluate the adoption and implementation of the Executive Order across all six education districts in Lagos State.
Representatives from the Office of Education Quality Assurance and the Ministry of Youth and Social Development emphasized the importance of implementing precautionary measures in schools to maintain a safe learning environment. They clarified that the exercise was corrective rather than punitive in nature.
