Ondo Church Members, Previously Abducted, Have Been Successfully Freed
Choir members from the Christ Apostolic Church (CAC), Oke Igan, Akure, Ondo state, who were kidnapped a week ago by unidentified gunmen, have been set free. The choir members were abducted while en route to a funeral ceremony along Ifon-Benin road. The kidnappers had demanded a ransom of N50 million for the release of the remaining 17 victims, as eight of the 25 abducted had managed to escape the kidnappers' den the previous week.
A church member revealed on Friday in Akure that the remaining victims were released late Thursday night after the ransom was paid. The church and the families of the victims reportedly paid a substantial amount of money for their release. The negotiating team brought the victims back to the church premises in Akure at 11:47 pm.
In response to the incident, the leadership of the Ondo State House of Assembly, led by Deputy Speaker Abayomi Akinruntan, visited the church and expressed their condolences. Akinruntan emphasized the need to review and strengthen kidnapping laws to better protect the lives and property of Ondo State residents. The House also pledged to work with security agencies to enhance security along the roads for safe travel in and out of Ondo State.
The Regional Superintendent of the church, Pastor Benjamin Akande, appreciated the support and prayers received since the unfortunate incident occurred.
