NiMet forecasts three-day dust haze, thunderstorms across Nigeria
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency has released a weather forecast for three days, predicting dust haze across northern and central Nigeria along with isolated thunderstorms in the southern region from Monday, December 8, to Wednesday, December 10, 2025.
This forecast is part of the Weather Outlook bulletin published by NiMet’s Central Forecast Office on Sunday.
As per the outlook, visibility in many northern states may decrease to between 2 km and 5 km due to dust particles suspended in the air. Moderate dust haze is anticipated over several northern states, including Katsina, Kano, Jigawa, Gombe, Bauchi, Adamawa, Taraba, Borno, and Yobe, while other northern areas might see a slight haze throughout the day.
The central region is expected to experience slight dust haze as well. In the southern part of the country, the day will start with a cloudy environment interspersed with periods of sunshine.
Isolated thunderstorms are predicted in Cross River and Akwa Ibom during the morning, while light rains and scattered thunderstorms are likely later in the day across Rivers, Delta, Ondo, Lagos, Edo, Ogun, Bayelsa, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom.
On Tuesday, moderate dust haze is forecast to persist in the northern states, with visibility remaining between 2 km and 5 km. The central region will continue to see slight dust haze.
In the southern states, the day is expected to be partly cloudy with intervals of sunshine, while isolated thunderstorms are anticipated over Bayelsa, Rivers, Delta, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom in the afternoon and evening.
By Wednesday, moderate dust haze will still be present in the North, while the central region is projected to experience moderate dust haze with similar visibility levels.
In the South, the morning will be predominantly cloudy, with isolated thunderstorms and light rains expected in the afternoon and evening over Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Lagos, Edo, Ogun, and Ondo.
NiMet has advised drivers to be cautious while driving during rain and thunderstorms, noting that “reduced visibility and slippery roads can heighten the risk of accidents.”
Airline operators are encouraged to obtain airport-specific weather documentation and consistently monitor weather updates to ensure safe flight planning and operations.
Residents are urged to stay informed through NiMet’s official website at www.nimet.gov.ng and to heed guidance from local authorities. The agency also stressed that “individuals suffering from asthma, respiratory conditions, or other health issues should take care to avoid exposure to suspended dust particles, which may worsen breathing difficulties.”
Recommended precautions include minimizing outdoor activities during periods of heavy haze, wearing protective masks when needed, and ensuring that medications or inhalers are easily accessible.
