Natasha Akpoti, Eberechi Eze lead Google’s 2025 searches in Nigeria

Google has released its 2025 Year in Search report for Nigeria, showcasing Senator Natasha Akpoti and footballer Eberechi Eze as the most searched individuals in the country.

The yearly report highlights the subjects that intrigued Nigerians during the year, covering significant news stories, notable personalities, entertainment, lifestyle, and popular inquiries.

“This year, Nigerians turned to Search to keep up with a fast-paced news environment. High-profile personalities generated considerable interest, with Senator Natasha Akpoti ranking as the #1 most searched Nigerian figure, underscoring the prominence of political discussions throughout the year,” the report remarked.

In addition to local news, Nigerians also paid close attention to worldwide events, with the Israel-Iran conflict and the US elections featuring among the leading search trends.

Taiwo Kola-Ogunlade, Google Communications and Public Affairs Manager for West Africa, pointed out that the 2025 Year in Search report transcends mere statistics, providing insights into what truly captivated Nigerians’ attention.

“The 2025 Year in Search serves as more than just a data set; it brightly reflects our collective interests.”

“Whether it's following the biggest news stories, remembering the legacies of icons we lost, or understanding the latest slang, these lists demonstrate that Nigerians are actively using Search to engage with their surroundings,” he added.

The report indicates that Nigerians exhibited a strong interest in a wide array of figures from politics, entertainment, sports, and global culture. On the local scene, names like Natasha Akpoti, Eberechi Eze, Governor Sim Fubara, Chika Ike, Mr Eazi, Kemi Adetiba, Hilda Baci, VDM, and Priscilla Ojo drew significant attention.

On a global scale, interest was driven by figures such as Gyokeres, Garnacho, Joao Pedro, Aaron Pierre, and Tyler Perry.

Entertainment personalities also attracted major interest, with Aaron Pierre, Chika Ike, Juma Jux, Mr Eazi, and Kemi Adetiba being among the top searches in the entertainment sector.

Nigerians displayed curiosity about word definitions, especially terms like Achalugo, allegedly, and Labubu.

In 2025, Nigerians relied on Google Search to monitor major losses, cultural milestones, and trending narratives across politics, entertainment, and technology. Interest spiked after the passing of notable figures such as former President Buhari, Pope Francis, and public personalities like Diogo Jota and Charlie Kirk.

The primary news topics that captured Nigerian searches in 2025 included the Club World Cup, Diogo Jota, former President Muhammadu Buhari, Charlie Kirk, and the iPhone 17.
