NRC appeals for patience amid Abuja-Kaduna train service disruption
The Nigerian Railway Corporation has requested that passengers utilizing the Abuja–Kaduna train service be patient, referring to the ongoing disruptions on this route as temporary.
Dr. Kayode Opeifa, the Managing Director of the Corporation, issued this request in a statement released on Tuesday, in response to public concerns regarding the decreased frequency of train services along the corridor. He emphasized that the Abuja–Kaduna route is a key service within Nigeria's railway modernization initiative, highlighting that even minor disruptions significantly impact the public.
Opeifa noted that the NRC had taken into account a recent piece by veteran journalist Muhammad Iskeel Abdullahi, published on the Journalists for Development platform, commending the concerns raised as both valid and patriotic. The NRC recognized the inconvenience faced by travelers, explaining that the reduction in services was due to damage incurred by its Diesel Multiple Unit rolling stock during an incident on August 26. The Corporation expressed remorse for the disruptions caused.
He clarified that the service decrease was not a result of negligence, but rather two major issues: the March 2022 terrorist attack on the rail line, which necessitated a thorough revision of safety protocols and improved collaboration with security agencies, and a recent derailment that resulted in damage to multiple coaches and a reduction in operational rolling stock.
Opeifa mentioned that repairs and refurbishments are currently in progress, and steps are being taken to send additional coaches to restore regular service frequency. The NRC reassured passengers that these current obstacles mark a period of recovery and rebuilding, rather than a decrease in dedication. Opeifa noted that the Federal Government, under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda, has continued to support initiatives aimed at enhancing rail infrastructure nationwide, with the Minister of Transport actively working with the Corporation to hasten full restoration.
Regarding ongoing efforts, he disclosed that the damaged coaches are being repaired and safety certified while temporary alternative rolling stock is being evaluated where possible. He affirmed that improving security along the Abuja–Kaduna corridor remains a top priority, with the goal of reinstating multiple daily trips as a key operational aim.
The NRC encouraged passengers to remain patient and understanding, assuring them of ongoing improvements and a return to full service as restoration efforts progress. He reiterated that the Abuja–Kaduna service is a priority for the Corporation, adding that feedback from passengers reinforces their commitment to providing safe, reliable, and efficient service. The NRC also committed to transparent communication and noted that the Managing Director can be contacted via SMS at 08075005411.
