NLC, TUC cancel protest, instruct FCTA workers to return immediately

Workers who get FCTA compensation have been ordered to report back to work immediately by the Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress.

The instruction came after the Senate Committee on the FCT, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, and the unions met.

The talks started on Monday evening and ended early Tuesday morning.

The unions said in a statement following the meeting that every problem brought up by the Joint Union Action Congress had been taken care of.

According to the unions, it was decided to drop all lawsuits pertaining to the conflict from the National Industrial Court.

The honourable minister gave organised labour the assurance that they would be treated with respect and would continue to be involved in the future.

“It was agreed that, arising from the strike action, no worker shall be victimised in any manner.

“All outstanding cases at the National Industrial Court (NIC) shall be withdrawn immediately.

As a result, all JUAC members and TUC and NLC affiliates employed by the Ministry of the FCT (MFCT) are thus instructed to return to work right away.

According to the statement, "all affiliates are enjoined to strictly comply with this directive in the interest of industrial peace and harmony in good faith."

TUC Secretary-General Nuru Toro and acting NLC General Secretary Benson Upah signed the declaration together.

A National Industrial Court in Abuja on Monday prohibited the TUC and NLC from carrying out the protest that was planned for Tuesday, February 3.

Following an ex parte application submitted by the FCTA and FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, Justice Emmanuel Subilim rendered the decision.
