NDLEA arrests Brazilian smuggling heroin worth over ₦3bn into Nigeria

A 30-year-old Brazilian lady named Ms. Ingrid Benevides was detained by National Drug Law Enforcement Agency agents at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja for attempting to import 30.09 kilogrammes of heroin into Nigeria.

Shortly after landing in Abuja on Qatar Airways flight QR1431 on Friday, January 23, 2026, the suspect was apprehended.

Intelligence-led surveillance of arriving passengers preceded the arrest.

Benevides was discovered carrying two checked-in bags that contained twenty-one factory-sealed packs of Brazilian coffee, according to a statement released on Sunday by the agency's spokesperson, Femi Babafemi.

After a careful examination of the bags, it was discovered that the coffee packets were hiding white substances, which were subsequently identified as heroin, which has an estimated street value of more than N3 billion.

During preliminary interrogation, the suspect, who described herself as a private security officer in Brazil, claimed to have carried the illegal substances into the nation while pretending to be a tourist, according to Babafemi.

Benevides informed investigators that she travelled to Nigeria "under the guise of visiting the country for holidays," he said, adding that more research was being done.
