NCC links Abuja network outages to diesel supply issues

The Nigerian Communications Commission has linked the recent disruptions in telecom services in parts of Abuja to challenges in the supply of diesel affecting essential telecommunications infrastructure.

In a press release issued on December 12, 2025, the Commission stated that these supply issues hindered operators' capabilities to power base stations and other vital facilities, leading to diminished service quality for customers.

According to the Commission, the diesel supply challenges stemmed from actions taken by the Nigerian Oil and Gas Suppliers Association.

It further mentioned that it is working with relevant stakeholders to find a resolution and pursue long-term solutions, including facilitating discussions between the affected service providers and the parties involved in diesel distribution.

“The NCC is actively working with relevant stakeholders to tackle the diesel supply problems and investigate sustainable solutions. The Commission encourages all involved parties to collaborate in swiftly resolving these issues by eliminating the diesel supply bottlenecks impacting essential telecommunications infrastructure, which were created by NOGASA’s actions,” the statement partially read.

The Commission indicated that it is taking measures to restore complete telecommunications services in Abuja and address the diesel supply interruptions impacting network operations, assuring that subscribers will be updated as the situation unfolds.

Previously, in October, the NCC pointed out that capacity limitations in the network were a significant factor contributing to poor telecom services in Abuja, Lagos, and other large cities.

Research conducted in collaboration with broadband intelligence firm Ookla revealed that high user density in urban regions resulted in dropped calls, video buffering, slow download speeds, and unsuccessful mobile payments.
