Lagos Shuts Down Alaba Market for Environmental Violations
The Lagos State government has closed down Alaba International Market due to issues like improper waste disposal, failure to pay waste bills, and severe environmental sanitation violations.
On Monday, Commissioner for Environment Tokunbo Wahab, using his official X account (formerly Twitter), disclosed this development.
He explained that the closure of the well-known market in Lagos was overseen by the Nigerian police operatives in the state. The sealing of this prominent electronics products market resulted from its failure to comply with the state government's laws on appropriate waste disposal and other environmental practices.
Accompanying images of the sealed market, he wrote, "Alaba International Market, Ojo, has been sealed up for poor waste disposal practices, failure to pay their waste bills, and gross environmental sanitation offenses."
This isn't the first instance of the Lagos State government shutting down popular markets within the state due to noncompliance with waste disposal and environmental practices laws. Recently, Mile 12 International Market and Owode Onirin Market faced closures for similar offenses.
