Gov AbdulRazaq approves 27.5% allowance for Kwara teachers

Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, has authorized a 27.5 percent Teachers Specific Allowance for educators throughout the state.

The authorization was made on Monday, mere hours after the governor presented the 2026 budget to the Kwara State House of Assembly.

This information was revealed in a statement from the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Rafiu Ajakaye, who mentioned that AbdulRazaq instructed that the allowance be effective starting January 2026.

"The 27.5% allowance is designated for TRCN-certified teachers working under the Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM) and the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) under CONKWESS I, while 21% applies to those without TRCN certification,” the statement indicated.

This decision came after ongoing pressure from the Nigeria Union of Teachers, which had warned of a statewide strike in December 2025 if their demands remained unaddressed.

The union had criticized the Kwara State Government for not implementing the Teachers Specific Allowance and the National Harmonised Teachers Retirement Age Act, which raises the retirement age for educators to 65 years or 40 years of service.

With over 25 states already adhering to the updated retirement age policy, the NUT requested an urgent meeting with the governor before December 13, 2025, to prevent a strike.

The statement also noted that AbdulRazaq emphasized the vital importance of teachers in the education sector and praised their dedication and contributions to nation-building.
