Gombe State Governor, Muhammadu Yahaya, has disbursed ₦8.2 billion to settle part of the backlog of gratuities owed to 3,204 retirees in the state and local government service. The payment includes ₦6.6 billion for 2,142 state government retirees and ₦1.6 billion for 1,062 local government retirees. This brings the total gratuity payments made since 2019 to ₦33.826 billion, the highest in Gombe State's history ¹.The governor explained that the payments were structured according to the financial capacity of each tier of government. For state government retirees, the payment covers the years 2021, 2022, and 2023. For local government retirees, the payment is staggered, with different local governments covering different years ¹.
Governor Yahaya attributed the achievement to his administration's disciplined financial management and commitment to transparency. He emphasized that paying gratuities is a matter of principle and sacred trust, and his government is determined to ensure that every retiree lives a life of dignity after a lifetime of service
The governor also reaffirmed his administration's commitment to prioritizing the welfare of pensioners and ensuring that no retiree is left to suffer due to non-payment of gratuities or other entitlements. The Arewa Christian Youth Leadership Forum (ACYLF) has applauded Governor Yahaya for his decision, describing it as a bold and humane action
