Family Of Driver Beaten To Death With Sticks And Stones Breaks Silence
The family of the late Fwimbe Thomas, who tragically lost his life in Jos, Plateau state, due to a brutal attack by an enraged mob wielding sticks and stones, is demanding justice for their loved one. The incident, which occurred on September 26, 2023, gained widespread attention on social media.
Fwimbe, a 35-year-old, fell victim to the mob's brutality, as recounted by his immediate elder brother, Wakbul Thomas Gofwan, in an interview with BBC. Wakbul characterized the incident as "Jungle misbehavior" rather than "Jungle justice," emphasizing the absence of any semblance of justice in the way his younger brother met his untimely demise.
According to Wakbul, Fwimbe was reportedly accused of theft by the mob, who shouted "barawo barawo" (thief, thief) as they beat him mercilessly until he collapsed and died. Wakbul expressed shock at the baseless accusations, asserting that Fwimbe had been driving the bus in question for two years, and the vehicle was duly registered in his name.
Recounting the events leading to his brother's death, Wakbul mentioned that no family member or friend was present during the incident. The news reached him through his office, which had discovered Fwimbe's lifeless body. The family was bewildered by the false accusations, especially considering that Fwimbe had plans to purchase land for a project and was set to get married next year.
"I spoke to him around 11 o'clock the day he died. We were both actively involved in a land purchase for a project he intended to start immediately after his wedding next year. This is a very difficult time for my family, but they are trying their best to endure the pain," Wakbul shared.
Fwimbe, the youngest of six siblings, was described as the "jewel of the house," and his loss has deeply impacted the family.
The Plateau State Police Command, represented by police spokesperson Alabo Alfred, has assured the public that efforts are underway to apprehend Thomas' killers. The police commissioner has also called for calm in the community. The incident stemmed from a minor altercation where the victim accidentally scratched a motorcycle rider with his vehicle, leading to a violent pursuit and fatal attack.
