Abike Dabiri-Erewa Urges Government Action for a Favorable Environment for Nigerians Abroad
Abike Dabiri-Erewa, the Chairperson of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), emphasized the government's responsibility in creating a conducive environment for residents. Speaking from Paris on Monday during an appearance on Channels Television's special program, "Empowering Tomorrow: A New Vision for Nigeria," commemorating Nigeria's 63rd independence anniversary, Dabiri-Erewa acknowledged the challenge of preventing the widespread migration, known as "Japa."
She highlighted the importance of understanding the motivation behind migration, urging the government to focus on job creation, support for small and medium enterprises (SMEs), and digital transformation. Dabiri-Erewa emphasized that migration itself is not inherently flawed but should be driven by clear goals.
"There is nothing wrong with migration, but migrate to a better place. Migrate to become a better person; don’t migrate to get into trouble," she stated. Dabiri-Erewa also pointed out that while some individuals seek opportunities abroad, the government must fulfill its role in providing the necessary support and conducive environment for its citizens.
