2026 budget will consolidate Tinubu’s reform gains — Minister
The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, has characterized the 2026 budget as a meticulously crafted tool intended to reinforce the successes of President Bola Tinubu’s reform agenda, which he noted is already yielding positive results.
Idris expressed these views in a statement issued in Abuja on Tuesday by his Special Assistant on Media, Malam Rabiu Ibrahim.
He clarified that the 2026 fiscal proposal, named Budget of Consolidation, Renewed Resilience and Shared Prosperity, is aimed at bolstering ongoing reforms and converting economic recovery into real benefits for Nigerians.
“Our ‘Budget of Consolidation, Renewed Resilience and Shared Prosperity’ is essential.
“It represents a pledge to intensify what is effective, to fortify achievements, and to ensure that the shared prosperity we advocate becomes a tangible reality for more Nigerians, and at an accelerated pace,” Idris remarked.
The minister pointed out that the last 31 months have involved challenging but necessary choices, commencing with significant economic reforms introduced to eliminate prolonged stagnation and set the country on a course for sustainable stability.
He mentioned that early indicators of progress are becoming visible, including enhancements in business activities, increasing investor confidence, declining inflation, and a steady growth in Nigeria’s foreign reserves.
“These figures are more than just statistics; they lay the groundwork for enduring improvement in the day-to-day lives of Nigerians.”
Moreover, Idris emphasized the necessity of rebuilding confidence between the government and the populace through transparent and consistent communication.
He reiterated the Federal Government’s commitment to keeping Nigerians updated on governmental actions, the challenges encountered, and the advancements made.
The minister highlighted various initiatives aimed at directly enhancing citizens' lives, such as the Nigerian Education Loan Fund student loan scheme and the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas initiative aimed at lowering transportation expenses.
He noted that other programs focused on youth include the Labour Employment and Empowerment Programme, the Jubilee Fellows Programme, and the Three Million Technical Talent initiative.
Idris also referenced ongoing efforts to combat food insecurity through the recapitalization of the Bank of Agriculture and the nationwide expansion of mechanized farming.
Regarding infrastructure growth, he enumerated significant projects currently in progress, including the Coastal Highway, the Sokoto to Badagry Motorway, the Ajaokuta Kaduna Kano Gas Pipeline, and new rail endeavors designed to reduce costs and enhance national connectivity.
On the topic of security, the minister mentioned that the Federal Government is enhancing recruitment, upgrading equipment, and fostering international collaboration to improve national security outcomes.
He cited the recent retrieval of kidnapped students in Kebbi and Niger States as clear evidence of the government’s renewed focus and commitment.
According to Idris, the administration is resolute in accelerating the delivery of support to Nigerians through ongoing reforms across essential sectors.
He urged the public to consider nation-building a shared responsibility, calling on Nigerians to engage positively, safeguard public assets, and dismiss misinformation.
The minister praised President Tinubu for what he termed calm and decisive leadership, noting that recent interactions with the United States have enhanced bilateral relations and strengthened Nigeria’s anti-insurgency initiatives.
“As we approach the new year, I encourage Nigerians to maintain their focus on the future. We have established a new foundation; now, it’s time to build the structure together.”
Idris concluded by reaffirming that the Ministry of Information and National Orientation will continue to be transparent, accountable, and consistent in relaying government policies and actions to the public.
