UAE commits to $25bn Nigeria-Morocco gas pipeline project
The UAE has signed on as a significant investor in the $25 billion Nigeria-Morocco gas pipeline, a transcontinental energy project that will alter power supply, trade, and economic development in West Africa and beyond.Leila Benali, Morocco's Minister of Energy Transition, announced the UAE's involvement during a parliamentary session on Tuesday, confirming that the project now has the support of key international institutions such as the Islamic Development Bank, the OPEC Fund, the European Investment Bank, and the UAE.
The African-Atlantic Gas Pipeline, as the project is officially known, will cover around 6,800 kilometres, 5,100 of which will be offshore, making it the world's longest offshore gas pipeline once completed. It is being developed as a partnership between Nigeria and Morocco.
"This pipeline is not just about gas," a Moroccan energy analyst told local media. "It's about building stronger economies and improving the lives of millions."
The vast infrastructure will pass through 15 West African countries, eventually sending gas to Europe and providing much-needed electricity to nearly 400 million people along the way.
The project will be completed in three phases: the first will connect Morocco to Senegal and Mauritania, the second would extend the network from Nigeria to Ghana, and the last phase will connect Ghana to Ivory Coast and Senegal.
All technical research and drawings have been finished, according to Benali, allowing building to commence. Jingye Steel Group of China has been contracted to supply the project's pipes.
Aside from its energy goals, the pipeline is expected to attract new investments, enhance regional cooperation, and support the transition to renewable energy across North and West Africa. Morocco, in particular, intends to use infrastructure to expedite its goals in green hydrogen and renewable energy.
With the UAE on board, the Nigeria-Morocco pipeline is quickly gaining traction as one of Africa's most ambitious and transformational energy projects.
