Salesforce acquires Informatica in $8bn deal
Salesforce has confirmed its acquisition of the cloud data management company Informatica in a transaction valued at $8 billion, representing a notable advancement in the tech giant's initiative to bolster its artificial intelligence and data infrastructure capabilities.
The announcement made on Tuesday reveals that Salesforce will offer $25 in cash per share for both Class A and Class B-1 common stock of Informatica. This offer takes into account Salesforce’s previous investment in the firm.
Informatica, established in 1993, delivers data management solutions to over 5,000 clients across more than 100 countries. At the time of the announcement, the company had an approximate market capitalization of $7.1 billion.
Marc Benioff, CEO of Salesforce, remarked, “This represents a transformative move towards providing enterprise-level AI that is secure, responsible, and deeply connected with global data.” He added, “Through this partnership, we’ll enhance Agentforce, Data Cloud, Tableau, MuleSoft, and Customer 360—enabling autonomous agents to operate with intelligence, context, and assurance throughout every enterprise.”
Salesforce stated that this acquisition will strengthen its agentic AI capabilities by facilitating improved access to data infrastructure and governance tools, thus allowing AI systems to function “safely, responsibly, and on a large scale.”
This acquisition follows initial reports from April 2024 which indicated that Salesforce was interested in Informatica. During that period, both companies experienced declines in their stock prices due to concerns regarding integration challenges, and Informatica publicly denied any discussions about a sale. However, those initial speculations have now culminated in a finalized agreement.
Informatica is not the only data management acquisition for Salesforce this year. In September, the company acquired Own Company for $1.9 billion in cash, a strategic move aimed at improving its data security and protection capabilities.
Steve Fisher, general manager at Salesforce, emphasized at the time of the Own Company acquisition, “The importance of data security has never been greater. Own's established expertise and products will enhance our capacity to provide robust data protection and management solutions.”
The Informatica acquisition underscores Salesforce’s ongoing strategy to create a comprehensive ecosystem for AI-driven enterprise software, reinforcing its position as a frontrunner in cutting-edge cloud and data services.
