SON warns of surge in fake engine oil across Nigeria

The Director-General of the Standards Organisation of Nigeria, Dr. Ifeanyi Okeke, has expressed concern regarding the growing prevalence of counterfeit engine oil and lubricants in Nigeria.

During an event titled “Impact of Adulterated/Lubricating Engine Oil on Nigeria’s Economy” held in Osogbo on Wednesday, he urged for cooperative efforts to address this issue.

He mentioned that the purpose of the event was to enhance awareness among stakeholders and consumers, as reported by NAN.

“The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) has advocated for unified actions against the rise of adulterated lubricants and engine oil within the country.

“He pointed out that adulterated lubricants represent a challenge that goes beyond product quality and poses serious dangers to vehicles, machinery, and the economy as a whole.

“The consequences of using adulterated lubricants and oils are extensive, as they shorten engine life and elevate maintenance expenses,” the source noted.

Represented by the Osun State Coordinator, Mr. Razak Oyewopo, Okeke highlighted that the distribution of substandard lubricants is a significant issue obstructing economic development and diminishing industrial productivity.

He elaborated that utilizing low-quality engine oil often leads to machinery breakdowns, operational interruptions, and considerable financial setbacks—especially for enterprises that heavily depend on machinery and transportation.

He underscored that for a nation striving to revive its economy, the rampant use of adulterated lubricants represents a grave danger.

Okeke remarked that inferior-quality engine oil frequently causes mechanical breakdowns, unexpected downtimes, and substantial financial losses—particularly for businesses reliant on machinery and transportation.

He reiterated that addressing this concern is crucial and cannot be postponed. Using certified, high-quality lubricants not only safeguards engines and machines but also contributes to fostering a robust, dependable, and productive economy.

He emphasized the importance of boosting consumer awareness and called upon stakeholders to embrace ethical standards and commit to offering only certified products.
