Dr. Bosun Tijani, Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, has announced that Nigeria will receive $3 billion in telecommunications equipment and fibre optic infrastructure by June 2025.Tijani revealed this during a panel discussion at the World Bank's Nigeria Development Update event.
Dr. Tijani stated that the significant investment will be critical to advancing Nigeria's digital infrastructure and strengthening the country's digital backbone.
The Minister announced that $1 billion worth of telecommunications equipment is expected to arrive in Nigeria by mid-2025.
He also stated that fibre optic cables worth $2 billion will be installed to improve broadband infrastructure across the country.
The $3 billion investment reflects the Federal Government's ongoing efforts, in collaboration with the World Bank, to secure long-term financing for broadband expansion.
Dr. Tijani spoke at a recent stakeholders' event in Abuja titled "Realising a Nigerian Vision of Broadband for All," about the magnitude of the challenge and the urgent need for investment.
He stated, "We are here with critical stakeholders to discuss how to attract investment and fund our broadband infrastructure. I am sure everyone listening to me understands that we can no longer live without internet technology; therefore, we all require quality access regardless of location."
He emphasised the importance of a robust digital infrastructure.
"We need to invest in that database. So it is what we refer to as telecommunications infrastructure or, in some cases, fibre optic cables. So, there is a cable that allows us to connect to the internet," he explained.
