Cardoso clinches Central Bank Governor of the Year award in Abidjan

The Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Mr. Olayemi Cardoso, has received the accolade of Central Bank Governor of the Year at the 2025 African Banker Awards, which took place in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.

The award was conferred during a gala event on Wednesday, May 28, by African Banker magazine.

Cardoso was acknowledged for his courageous and strategic leadership in executing monetary and regulatory reforms that have bolstered trust and stability within Nigeria’s financial system.

A statement released by the central bank on Thursday highlighted that the awards committee recognized the Central Bank under Cardoso’s guidance “for enacting crucial policy measures aimed at stabilizing the naira, enhancing transparency in the foreign exchange market, and restoring policy credibility. These initiatives have established a foundation for enduring macroeconomic resilience and renewed investor confidence,” the statement noted.

Dr. Nkiru Balonwu, the Governor’s Adviser on Stakeholder Engagement and Strategic Communication, accepted the award on behalf of Cardoso.

She was joined on stage by Dr. Victor Oboh, Director of the Central Bank of Nigeria’s Monetary Policy Department; Dr. Olubukola Akinwumi, Director of the Banking Supervision Department; and Dr. Aloysius Uche Ordu, a member of the Monetary Policy Committee.

According to the event organizers, “The award represents the committee’s acknowledgment of Governor Cardoso’s recent successes and the Central Bank’s vital role in addressing market imbalances and repositioning the Nigerian economy for sustainable development.”

Now in its 19th year, the African Banker Awards are organized by African Banker magazine in partnership with the African Development Bank Group, which is the official patron of the event.
