I would love it if the forthcoming Edo State gubernatorial election marks the beginning of issue politics in Nigeria. Let us start off with an education. I would love Obaseki and Ize-Iyamu to unveil policies that look like this:

Edo State Education Policy 2020:

[1] We will dedicate 30% of our annual budget towards education. This amount will be ring-fenced come what may

[2] Class sizes in all primary and secondary schools across Edo State will never exceed 30

[3] There must be at least 10 primary schools in each of the 18 local government areas that make up Edo State

[4] There must be at least five secondary schools in each of the 18 local government areas that make up Edo State

[5] Each local government area must have at least one polytechnic or technical college

[6] Education will be free to all pupils up until the end of secondary school

[7] All primary school pupils will receive one free meal a day

[8] Local governments will be free to raise extra taxes to fund education if the need arises

[9] Every school in Edo State will be refurbished at least once every four years

[10] Head teachers of primary schools will be placed on the same salary scale as members of the Edo State House of Assembly, while secondary school principals will be placed on the same salary scale as commissioners.
