The federal government intends to provide affordable housing for 80% of low-income earners
Ahmed Dangiwa, the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, has announced plans to develop cost-effective housing designs and promote the construction of quality and affordable homes for Nigerians. This initiative aims to address the housing needs of 80% of low- and medium-income earners in the country. Dangiwa shared this vision during a meeting with the leadership of the Nigerian Institute of Quantity Surveyors, headed by President Shonubi Olayemi, at the ministry headquarters. He emphasized that affordable housing is a top priority during his tenure as the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, especially for the 80% of Nigeria's population falling within the low to medium-income bracket.
The minister emphasized that hardworking citizens deserve to reside in well-planned homes and neighborhoods that uphold inclusivity and fairness principles. To achieve this, the ministry is focusing on affordable housing designs based on highly efficient bills of quantities. According to a statement signed by the ministry's Deputy Director for Information, Badamasi Haiba, the minister expressed these sentiments. He revealed that an affordable housing design committee was established in his first week in office to create more efficient design options that align with the income levels of Nigerians in that category. The minister added, "Our professionals in the ministry have made significant progress, and we would appreciate your input before we present these designs to the public. Our objective is to develop the most efficient, practical, and sustainable affordable designs to fulfill our mission."
