ABUJA — Team Lagos on Sunday came out victorious and appeared to be the best on all states at the 2017 Asaph Zadok National Scrabble Championship held in Abuja.
Team Lagos hold on to the title, after five out of six players emerged as the top six on the score board.
Team Lagos won a trophy and a cash prize worth N100,00, while Delta and Akwa Ibom finished second and third place respectively.
Dipo Akanbi of Lagos State, emerged the 2017 overall individual champion after a winning streak of 18 games with a score of +743. Akanbi won a trophy and a cash prize of N150,000.
Dayo Tayo also from Lagos State, finished 2nd place with a total of 16.5 wins and a score of +346 and a cash prize of N100,00.
The defending world scrabble champion however only finished at 14th place, Wellington Jighere, after winning only 14 games and +1076 aggregate.
“In Lagos, we add fun when playing scrabble. Scrabble is part of us because we play every day. We give all glory to God.’’ Akanbi said.
Suleiman Gora, former President of Nigerian Scrabble Federation, congratulated all the participants and winners, saying that the competition was intense.
He added that the greatest problem of the sport was the budget and asking for funds from corporate bodies and stakeholders to support the game of scrabble.
