Katsina State Police have imprisoned a journalist in the state, Danjuma Katsina, because of hurtful comments on a newly elected member of Nigeria’s House of Representatives from the state, Mansur Mashi.
One of the associates of the journalist, Zaharadeen Umar, said Mr. Katsina was summoned by the state’s Police Command around 8 p.m. on Saturday to explain his side over a complaint filed by Mr. Mashi’s lawyer.
After hearing the side of Mr. Katsina, the police later imprisoned the journalist.
Mr. Katsina posted a comment on Facebook in which he inspected the result of Mashi/Dutsi bye-election regulated in May, speculating why Mr. Mashi was approved to challenge the polls regardless of facing court action on corruption.
Mr. Katsina was imprisoned overnight despite attempts by the Katsina state branch of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), and head authorities of the Nigeria Guild of Editors (NGE), to guarantee his liberation.
Katsina Police spokesperson, Gambo Isah, said he was unmindful about the journalist incident but he assured to find out and get back on the issues.
