Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, the All Progressives Congress ‘ lawmaker, representative of Delta Central, escaped an attack from suspected assassins during the weekend.
The circumstance happened at Effurun market in Uvwie Local Council Area of Delta State, during an empowerment programme for his supporters. According to a report, one of the two bullets shot at him had grazed his ear, while his wife, Rosemary and some of the members of his team were also hit.
200 women were to be empowered N20,000 each and the incident occurred after he had allegedly attended to 150 of the women. Some of his supporters are severely injured and are now receiving medical treatments at a hospital in Effurun near Warri.
Omo-Agege said he was thankful to God for giving him a second life. He further stated that he still has not idea for the reason behind the attempted assassination. He said, “The bullet grazed through my right ear, if I was not lucky, I would have been dead. Two bullets were fired at me. My brother was shot and one of my supporters was almost killed at Ekpan market.”
“Unfortunately, these took place in the presence of police officers who could not arrest any of them. I have taken a first step by reporting the matter at the Ekpan police station. I have equally spoken with the state commissioner of police.”
He vowed to take the matter to the highest level, saying that he would do everything to make certain that those who are involved will be punished.
“What took me to these places was to show my appreciation to the people of Uvwie for voting me in the last election, but some people felt threatened by my empowerment programme,” he said.
He stated that he was not just out to give out milling or sewing machines, but he was to increase value to the people who sell tomatoes, pepper and iced fish in the market.
Omo-Agege went to Jigbale, Ubogo and Urhuvwerhun after the incident where he also empowered people.
Mr. Aruviere Martin Egharhevwa, the senator’s media adviser, explicated that the gunmen shot sporadically, damaging chairs and canopies at the event and injured several people.
The state chapter of APC has appealed to security agencies to investigate the attack and apprehend those who are behind it.
Jones Erue Ode, the party Chairman, who made the appeal said, “The repugnant attack shows that the perpetrators and their sponsors are intimidated by the love and solidarity that the people have shown for him.”
