Tribunal Sets Date for Issuing Verdict on Ogun Governorship Election
The Ogun State Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal has scheduled the delivery of its judgment for Saturday, September 30th, in response to a petition filed by Oladipupo Adebutu, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, challenging the victory of Governor Dapo Abiodun in the March 18th election. This notice of judgment was communicated to their legal representatives on Thursday by the Secretary of the tribunal.
Governor Dapo Abiodun, from the All Progressives Congress (APC), emerged as the winner of the governorship election, securing 276,298 votes against Adebutu's 262,383 votes, as declared by INEC.
Adebutu's petition, marked EPT/OG/GOV/03/2023, contested the incumbent governor's victory, alleging non-compliance with the provisions of the Electoral Act and electoral malpractice during the election.
During the proceedings, Goddy Uche, counsel to Adebutu, presented a comprehensive collection of documents in multiple 'Ghana-must-go' bags to the tribunal at the Magistrates’ Court in Isabo, Abeokuta. This action followed the tribunal's instruction during the pre-hearing stage that both petitioners and respondents should submit their documents as part of their cases.
Uche confirmed that he had served the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Governor Abiodun, and the APC – the first, second, and third respondents, respectively – with a 98-page schedule of documents. He also noted that he had listed all the submitted documents, which included INEC forms, ECAs, voters’ registers, and printed IREV results, before the court.
In March, Adebutu expressed confidence that the tribunal would overturn Governor Dapo Abiodun's victory declared by INEC. He described the Ogun governorship election as the worst in the history of Nigeria's democracy, citing incidents of intimidation, harassment, and subversion during the polls. Adebutu criticized the harassment and threats that prevented people from voting, and he asserted that numerous inconsistencies and injustices had taken place during the election.
