EFCC Brings Fraud Charges Against Couple and Another Individual

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission's Enugu Zonal Command has presented Simon Udeani and his wife, Dorcas, before Justice M.G. Umar of the Federal High Court in Enugu. As revealed in an EFCC statement on Tuesday, the couple faces a three-count charge related to obtaining N2,750,000 through false pretenses in an alleged land fraud.

One of the charges against the Udeanis alleges that "Between July 10, 2019, and December 19, 2019, in Enugu, Enugu State, within the jurisdiction of the Federal High Court of Nigeria, with intent to defraud, you, Udeani Simon Sunday, and Udeani Dorcas Amaka, induced one Onugu Angela Chinyere to deliver to you the sum of N2.7m under the pretense that you would sell to her a plot of land behind Ebenezer Anglican Church, Ala-Uguaji, along Enugu/Port Harcourt Road, which pretense you knew to be false and thereby committed an offense contrary to Section 1 (1)(a) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud-Related Offences Act, 2006, and punishable under section 1 (3) of the same act."

The statement further mentioned that the couple pleaded not guilty to the charges. Subsequently, the prosecuting counsel, Nurudeen Ingawa, requested a trial date, while the defense counsel, E.C. Nwauba, Esq., made an application for their bail.

Justice Umar approved their bail at the amount of N5 million with one surety providing an equal sum. The case has been adjourned until February 6, 2024.

The statement also mentioned that in a distinct case, Johnson Aniekwe faced arraignment before Justice Cyprian Ajah of the Enugu State High Court on three counts related to obtaining N9,170,000 by false pretense, forgery, and impersonation.

Aniekwe entered a plea of not guilty to the charges. Subsequently, the prosecuting counsel, Nurudeen Ingawa, requested the court to set a trial date, while the defense counsel, A.G. Anyigo, appealed to the court for the defendant's bail.

Justice Ajah approved the bail request and postponed the case until March 7, 2024.
