CONTROVERSIAL and flambouyant monarch Oba Fredrick Akinruntan the Olugbo of Ugbonla in Ondo State has become the first black person on earth to buy the 2014 version of Bentley's Continental saloon car.
Involving a major redesign that sees the car come with all sorts of new comforts, the Continental aims to grab an increased share of the top-end luxury vehicle market. Based in Crewe in the UK, Bentley offers bespoke solutions to customers and Oba Akinruntan requested this, getting his car specially customised to his personal taste.
One of Nigeria's petroleum billionaires, Oba Akinruntan is the chairman of Obat Oil and is known for his opulence, which sometimes matches that of Arab sheikhs. He already has a custom-built 2012 Rolls Royce similar to that of Queen Elizabeth II.
Last week, Oba Akinruntun's Bentley arrived in Nigeria and he has already installed his own Olugbo number plate on it. His car is the first such one in the country, although it is unclear if anyone else has placed an order for one.
Always in the news for one controversy or the other, Oba Akinruntan, the Olugbo of Ugbonla in the Ilaje area of Ondo State was recently been banished from his domain by local indigenes. He is presently staying at his private palace in Igbokoda, where critics claim he is ruler over his family and not Ugbonla.
Apparently, local indigenes prefer the former traditional ruler of the town Oba Mafimisebi, who was deposed by the Supreme Court following a long legal battle with the billionaire oil magnate. After the ruling, Oba Akinruntan was installed as Olugbo by the state government amidst protests and up until this day, it is Oba Mafimisebi that resides in Ugbonla.
